Buffalo Champion Athletes Honored by the City 

Garden City Mayor Melvin Dale on Tuesday read three proclamations recognizing three Garden City High School students’ achievements from last May.
The city commission declared Sept. 5 as Sion Audrain Day. Audrain won the individual 6A State Golf Championship on May 22 at Auburn Hills Municipal Golf Course in Wichita with an 18 hole score of 2 under par

Garden City’s golf team finished first in the Western Athletic Conference last season, first at the Hutchinson 6A regional and fourth at the state tournament.

GCHS track and field athletes Ruben Heurta and DeMarcus Elliott were also recognized. The commission declared Sept. 6 as DeMarcus Elliott Day and Sept. 7 as Ruben Huerta Day.

Elliott placed third in the shot put at the 6A regional at Dodge City and won the 6A State shot put championship on May 27 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita with a throw of 52’6″.

Huerta placed second in the pole vault at the Dodge City regional and then won the 6A State pole vault championship in Wichita with a vault of 15 feet.

As a team, GCHS finished fourth in the 6A State Track and Field Championships.
