Cross Country Running into First

Fall sports are off and running, and no team know that better than the Garden City High School cross country team under the coaching of Krista Linenberger, Derek  Algrim, and Janet Hackett.

Over the summer months runners would meet up to four times a week to do a workout. “We had 20-30 high school runners there consistently. Many of our competitive runners put in good summer miles,” head Coach Krista Linenberger said

The team started off their season in Great Bend, both the girls and boys varsity teams took first. “The first meet was great. The small meet gave us a chance to see where we are at in this early part of the season. I think we coaches are pleased with what we saw, not satisfied though. Lots of room to get better,” Linenberger said.

Coaches aren’t the only ones with high expectations for the season, runners also know where they need to improve. “The main thing I need to improve is my management, after the first mile, a lot of times I try to go to fast and it does not work out for me,” Kameron Wildeman.

With many returning varsity runners the season has high hopes among the coaches and the team. “At the end of the season I see my team and I making top three at regionals so we can punch our ticket to state. I think that the boys and girls have a really good chance of making it, we just need to keep chasing our goals and working together to improve,” Abby Murrell said.

The varsity and junior varsity cross country teams will next be in action on Thursday, Sept. 7, in Hesston.
