Save the date, Nov. 10 will be Opening Night for the production of “In The Heights”. The play is a tale of a lively community in Washington Heights full of hopes, dreams, and pressures and struggles.
“In the Heights” is a musical with a story about overcoming adversity and finding home, this is an important story for our students and our community.” Head Director Barbara Hilt responded. “This may be a musical about second generation immigrants living in New York, but it is a relevant story to Garden City, Kansas as well.”
A cast of 45 students will be starring in the production with another 40 helping in scenery, props and costumes. The cast rehearses Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m.
Kimberly Loya, arts and communication senior, will be playing the part of Nina Rosario. Nina is returning back from her first year at Stanford with the news that she lost her scholarship. With this she had no choice but to drop out and is now faced with the dilemma of telling her parents.
“I think I got the part because Hilt saw my potential to connect with Nina personally. When an actor can personally connect with their character, then it brings the sense of truth that theater requires. Not only that, but vocally her part is in my range, yet it still gives me the challenge of growing and making my voice stronger.”
An important part of being ready to perform is rehearsing.
“Rehearsals have been going really good, we started early this summer by learning most of the songs” said Kimberly. Our choreographers Kimberly Cano and Austin Godfrey have done an amazing job at challenging us. With some cleaning, the dance numbers will look amazing. As to singing, we are ahead of schedule, I believe we’ve almost learned all of the group songs. All in all rehearsals have been very productive.”
Show dates are Nov. 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and Nov.11 and 12 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets will be available from the ticketing website. General admission at $5 for students and $10 for adults. Season tickets for all four of productions throughout the school year, can be purchased for $15 for adults or students.
