The Lady Buffs volleyball team is killing the competition this season with a WAC championship, and a Sub-State championship which leads them to the 6A state tournament for the third year in the row. The girls are currently 27-8.
“We knew we were going to have to come off on a good start against Hays so we came in with a lot of energy and dominate all day. It defiantly helped that our coach put together a scouting report on a couple of the teams.” Lindsey Richmeier senior said. The Lady Buffs last week played against Great Bend, Hays, Liberal, and Dodge City. The WAC tournament was a round-robin tournament in Liberal. The girls first played against Hays beating them in two sets 25-20 and 25-14. They then played against Great Bend beating them 25-9 and 25-14. The
Lady Buffs played Liberal third which was their toughest match beating them 25-16 and 25-23. Their final match was against Dodge City whom they beat 25-11 and 25-12. The Lady Buffs have one the last seven volleyball WAC championships.
“We started off slow and had trouble talking but towards the end we got a lot better, and started playing like we wanted to win.” Kelbi Richter sophomore said. The girls had two matches at sub-state. The first match was against Wichita West which they beat 25-11 and 25-7. Their second match was against Dodge City which they beat 25-9 and 25-12 in the championship match. The two wins led them to the state tournament in Topeka tomorrow.
“We’ve been to State three years in a row now and a lot of us know what State looks like so we know what needs to get done and how to prepare for. In practice we’ve been working really hard and making adjustments to accommodate each team we play. Our defense has been getting lots of reps. Everyone knows what they have to do and the role they play so I think we have a good chance at state.” Adisyn Swan senior said. The volleyball team has the number six seed at the tournament, and are in the second pool with number two seed Topeka-Washburn Rural, number seven seed Lawrence High, and number three seed Blue Valley West.
The defending state champions Olathe Northwest are in the first pool.
