Last year at about this same time the Buffs wrestling team started a long and hard working season that would pay off in the long run.

The Buffs had an amazing run last season with the team being a close group and wanting the best for each other.

Many of the returning wrestlers are experiencing a different type of atmosphere this year. Wyatt Mcelroy is a varsity returner who is experiencing a whole new environment then last year when he was a freshman.

“I think we lost our chemistry as a team compared to the other years, we were more worried about our own individual success then the team,” Mcelroy said “This year I expect a lot from our team, we are hungry and are ready to take our title once again.”

Alex Herrera, junior, is a second year returner for the Buffs wrestling team. With only have two more seasons with this team he is wanting more than last year, and to push the team harder and achieve the goals they have as a team.

“I think the team did really well last year, we just missed a few extra steps to be a championship team,” Herrera said. “ I think this year we are really focusing on taking those extra steps and getting back on top.”

Curtis Near, senior, didn’t finish last year with the results he expected, but he’s ready for this season and can’t wait to see what comes of it.

“I think overall as a team we fought herd every tournament until the state tournament,” Near said “We thought we had it won which is why we lost. This year I expect our team to overcome the odds, pull off the upset and get back on top.”

Prieto has high expectations for his team and always expects the best. “A lot of teams would be happy with third, but that’s not our standard,” Prieto said. “We’ll go back and evaluate everything we did and come back ready again next year. I’m proud of the kids. They wrestled their tails off and we’ll take away the positives.”

The Buffs season will soon begin with the Brown and White Scrimmage taking place on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
