Lewis Carroll’s famous white rabbit dashed a crossed Garden City High School’s auditorium stage featuring Eresay Alcantar-Velásquez as Alice.
These young actors and actresses have spent their class time making the set, costumes and learning their lines.
“My favorite part about this play was using our class time to rehearse our lines and scenes,” Karime Loya, (card soldier) said. “This means most of our rehearsal time leading up to the show was during the school day. It has taught me many skills that I can use in my future career as an actress.”
Auditions for the cast took place the first week of the semester. With the larger cast, students are given the opportunity to meet new people and have new experiences.
“The cast did an amazing job of portraying their characters,” Loya said. “The Hilts did a great job of casting people. This play was different personally because there was a huge cast and I got to meet new people and broaden my horizons.”
The whimsical scenery of the production was captured in the glowing mushrooms and the hand-stitched costumes, also made by the students.
“I would recommend this play to anyone who has an open mind,” Rachel Bentley, health and trade teacher, said. “People need to keep in mind the different origin of the story. I thought it was interesting to see how they interpreted the story into a school production. The stage set up and the props were amazing to me. The work these students put into the play paid off in the light and enjoyable atmosphere.”
The production appeals to the audiences’ visual effect and captures their attention.
“I really enjoyed the setting,” Ana Seijas, trade and health academy senior, said. “Everything was visually appealing to me and the cast did a great job. The production was way different from the movie and I enjoyed the differences. My favorite part was the atmosphere during the caterpillar scene. They did a perfect job capturing the aroma the caterpillar gives off in the movie. The show was impressive to me because of all the hard work that goes into making them run smoothly in such a short amount of time.”
The next production repertory theatre is putting on is, Peter and the Starcatcher during the second semester.
