The Buffs basketball team played against the Great Bend Panthers last Friday night. There 69-35 victory puts them in second place for the WAC standings. The Buffs upped their WAC ranking to 4-1 and now 10-7 in their regular season. Unlike the Jan. 5 33-28 win in Great Bend, the Buffs led this game from start to finish, never trailing. A 10-7 first-quarter lead was expanded to 24-17 by halftime, thanks in part to a pair of late 3-pointers by Jayden Crook and Kyler Lamb. In the third, three times Great Bend pulled to within six, and each time, the Buffs rebuilt their lead and finished the quarter up by double digits, 39-29.
“We have a pretty good season and we are currently in second in WAC. We should be able to beat the teams coming up and if we do then we should win WAC.” Said junior Jarrod Springston. “We need to keep practicing and start playing smarter since the season is coming to a close. We need to keep getting off to a good start and hold our lead throughout the whole game.” Said Springston.
The Buffs hit 19-40 shots and 3 of 14 behind the three point line. Demarcus Elliot finished the game with a game high of 15 points.
“We played pretty good and our defense held to them to minimum points. We have been getting better all season. I hope we are able to win WAC and then go on to regionals and state and finish out the season good.” Said senior Demarcus Elliot. The Buffs forced the Panthers to 18 turnovers and the Panthers shot 13-40. Carlos Acosta also had double digit points, scoring 11.
“I had a pretty good game, and our defense was really good. We kinda got on a hot streak and we were able to hold our lead through out the whole game.” Said junior Carlos Acosta.
For Great Bend, Alex Schremmer scored 9 points for the Panthers. Trent Steuder led the rebound stats for the Panthers with six. The Buffs will close out their regular-season home schedule on Tuesday with a rematch from two weeks ago with Dodge City. They will finish out the WAC and regular season with road games at Hays and Liberal.
