The Kansas State Board of Education approved the creation of the Civic Advocacy Network award in 2016. The idea was to create a network of schools who provide outstanding civic engagement opportunities to their students. The criteria for being inducted into the Civic Advocacy Network are the “Six Proven Practices of Effective Civic Learning” created by the Education Commission of the States and endorsed by many civic education groups including the Center for Civic Education. Schools submitted evidence of how they had created programs addressing each practice. Those applications were scored by a panel on a scoring rubric. The higher the percentage of students engaged the more points the school scored on the rubric. Each practice was scored and those scores combined and the winners selected.
A recognition celebration will be held September 17th (Constitution Day) at 1:00 in the Auditorium of the Memorial Building 120 SW 10th in Topeka. The public is welcome.
