The Buffs charged in with their best effort against the Derby panthers last Friday for their first game of the season. Despite their determination the panthers closed the game with a win and a score of 47-6.

“Going into the Derby game I had one mindset, and that was to win,” Carlos Acosta, quarterback, said. “I knew it was going to be tough considering the strong past of the team. Our communication was low and that is something we need to work on before we play again. I am looking forward to growing as a quarter back and overcoming all of the challenges that come with playing that position. I am excited to help the young ones out and making them more prepared to take a leadership role on the team next year.”

After losing most of the starting team due to seniors leaving for college, the starting defensive and offensive line is full of young potential.

“It is a disadvantage sometimes having such a young team,” Lane Durst, receiver, said. “We have some sophomores starting on the varsity offensive line. But we do have some big, experienced linebackers, they help us out a lot. However, the teams we play have years of strong experience and are more comfortable with each other on the field.”

The varsity had their second game at home on Friday the 7 at home against Valley Center. The score of the game ended up in a Hornet victory 20-41.

“I thought I had a decent game,” Reese Morss, linebacker, said. “Considering the loss we took as a team we struggled with tackling and capitalizing. We definitely have things we need to work on to better ourselves. Throughout the rest of the season I am looking to make a name for myself and improve.”

Morss was a transfer from Holcomb high school. He came to Garden City for his senior season.

“There is not much of a difference,” Morss said. “Besides the coaches and my teammates I did not expect much to be different. What is expected of me for sure did not change.”

Next weekend the Buffs will travel to Hutchinson to take on the Salt hawks and the following week the team will take on the Hays Indians.  The team would like to see you their for the Hays game.
