Volleyball plays for cancer

Just dig it. Girls Volleyball had a tournament last Thursday Sept. 27 at Wichita Heights. The girls went 2-1 at the tournament, beating the Junction City Bluejays and the Wichita Heights Falcons only losing the first match to Maize south.

“We played well at times although it did take us a little while to get warmed up and once we did we really came out and outplayed the competition, the first game we just weren’t warmed up,” Trista Bailey, volleyball coach, said.

On Oct. 13 the team will then make the trip to Dodge City for the WAC (western athletic conference) tournament on Saturday. The volleyball girls have won WAC for the last seven years in a row and will be going back to defend their championship.

“We are ready to go to WAC and win, but we can’t be too confident and we still have to play well if we are serious about defending our championship,” said Reagan Karlin a trade a varsity junior.

The team is sitting at a 16-8 record right now going into WAC. “We have every reason to feel confident going into WAC, but we have to be prepared because the other teams have a desire to take us down after seven years of winning,” Bailey said.

After WAC the team will be going to compete at sub-state and try to get one of the spots to go to state. The location of sub-state depends on how good the players do as a team and what their season long record is also how well the team does at WAC. “I feel very confident that we are going to sub-state and then we are going to start preparing for what comes after that,” Remi Vargas a varsity junior said.

However, the team isn’t getting ahead of themselves and they are still preparing for the competition at WAC coming up.

“We really have to make sure we stay strong at WAC and keep our heads up, we are going to try starting out a little faster. Come support us volleyball girls at Dodge City on Saturday the 13,” Karlin said.

On Thursday the volleyball team had their breast cancer awareness night also known as Play Pink Night. They then had senior night on Oct. 4 to support the volleyball seniors. The seniors are Taylor Terpstra and Reagan Nordby.
