Snag Golf Moving Into Elementary PE

GA Golf Professional Jeff Burey was in Garden City on Nov. 16 to do a presentation to physical education teachers in USD 457. The program is called SNAG (Starting New at Golf) and is a widely-acclaimed program of teaching (physical education) teachers, and coaches, how to teach kids the fundamentals of the game of golf. Burey is the chairman of the Golf in School Committee for the Midwest Section PGA.

Yearbook and Sugar Beet staff travel to the windy city

Big City living in the Windy City. Earlier this month seven students had the opportunity to experience the Chi-Town. The Buffalo yearbook and Sugar Beet student publications adviser, Brian Nelson, took a group of juniors from Garden City High School to Chicago, Illinois. The students were hand selected by their teachers and editors. Oliver Nguyen, Kyle Doll, Emily Ortiz, Nathan Morren, Lane Durst, Anelle Garcia and Karime Loya-Enriquez made up the group of students who traveled to the Land of Lincoln. Selected students left Nov. 1, traveling by vehicle to Denver International Airport to board their afternoon flight to Chicago.

Midterm election causes upsets across nation

The month of November comes with the following: cold weather, hot drinks and most importantly, elections. Elections allow for the people of the city, county, state and nation to have their voice be heard. On Nov. 6, thousands of voters across the state cast their ballots in the midterm elections to have an input on the nation. 

Florence Wilson’s Rycek hooks national award

A national award has been presented to a Florence Wilson staff member. Florence Wilson Elementary School psychologist Jenna Rycek received a Life Changer of the Year Spotlight Award from the National Life Group. The recipient of this award was announced on Oct. 29 with a surprise award ceremony at Florence Wilson.

Soccer falls to Manhattan in Regionals

It was crunch time for the Buffs men’s soccer team when they took care of business after heading off to regionals in Topeka on Thursday, October 25th. With a record of 11-5, the Buffs were in good position in seeding for regionals and possibly a shot at state.

Former Newman Basketball Coach Inspires With Challenging Life Story

For much of his lengthy career in coaching boys and men’s basketball, Mark Potter had engineered nothing but success, from his early days of high school coaching at Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel, Cheney and Wichita South, before resurrecting a long-dormant basketball program at Newman University in Wichita.

Girls’ volleyball takes home hardware

Lady Buffs dig their way through the sub-state competition for a chance to compete at the state level. On Oct. 20 the volleyball team competed in the sub-state competition and beat both of their competitors. They first faced Derby and after beating them they went against the Topeka High team.
