This November, the theatre department will be performing the play Pippin. In the story, Pippin is the son of the Holy Roman Empire patriarch Charlemagne. “He realizes he is just not the hero everyone wants him to be,” Barb Hilt, theatre director said. “Pippin is a story about growing up and the journey of life. Pippin discovers he can be who he wants to be and make choices for himself rather than chase after a false image of himself imposed by others.”

Following a dance boot camp held this summer, students in the Musical Theatre Rep class have been rehearsing the play since the beginning of the school year. The play also features a live music pit, conducted by Lyle Sobba. Show dates are Nov. 9 and 10 at 7pm, and Nov. 11 is free to all GCHS students who bring an ID at 2:30pm.

A big part of putting the play together came from designing the costumes. The costume designers spent a lot of time making the costumes for the actors. “I am the head designer for this show,” Seferino Ramirez, Arts and Comm. Sophomore said. “I helped make a lot of the costumes, so I’m very excited for everyone to see them. You can tell which ones I made because they all have bows on them.”

Jared Arellano plays the lead role of Pippin. This will be his eighth show and his second lead character. “After I did my first show I knew this was something I want to do for the rest of my life and if it wasn’t for my amazing directors then I wouldn’t be the man I am now,” Arellano, Arts and Comm. Junior said. “They are so dedicated to the theatre program and every single one of their students. They have truly changed my life for the better and I guarantee they will keep making a difference in kids’ lives long after I graduate. The message the show brings is to find your place in the world and just live the best life you can. I want to really show that through everything that goes on in your life there is still a purpose for you even if everything goes wrong, that you can’t give up because it will all be worth it in the end.”
