The cross country runs past competition at regionals and state. Five runners qualified for the Kansas state cross country meet last Saturday.
“The season was good for both girls and boys we all ran well and there was many people who improved a lot from last season I can’t wait for next season and what it has to offer us” Destiny Avila, trade and health junior, said.
Regionals was hosted at the Cessna cross country course. The boys team did not qualify as a team but qualified two as individuals. The two boys were junior Ethan Fisher and senior Mario Bustillos. The girls team also didn’t qualify as a team but qualified three individuals. The girls were junior Kaety Kolhorst, junior Destiny Avila, and senior Taylor Savolt.
“I personally feel like I gave all I had but came short of going to state by a place,” Javyn Contreras, trade and health senior, said. “Team wise I feel we ran to our best ability but couldn’t respond as well in scoring, which we needed”
The Team then traveled to Lawrence Kan. To compete for a state championship at Rim Rock Farms cross country course.
“We weren’t able to come away with any personal record,” Taylor Savolt, trade and health senior, said. “but I felt everyone put themselves out there, going with fast first miles and trying to hold on the last 2 miles. It’s sad the season is over but all the returners can’t wait for next season
The Boys team did not place as a team but placed individually. Junior Mario Bustillos got 53rd and Junior Ethan Fisher got 57th
“I was definitely different not having a full team there to support but I still ran good,” Ethan Fisher, trade and health junior, said.
The girls team also did not place as a team but Senior Taylor Savolt placed 88th, junior Kaety Kolhorst placed 87th, and junior Destiny Avila placed 67th.
“State was awesome! The atmosphere was really intense. I didn’t PR so I was upset about that, but it was a great opportunity and I can’t wait till next season,” Kaety Kolhorst, trade and health junior, said.
This is the end of the 2018 season for the Garden City High School cross country and they will be back in action next season.
