A close knit of students make new club
Sewing is the craft of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a needle and thread. Elizabeth Alfeo started a program knitting here at GCHS. It is not technically a knitting “club” right now, but it is hosted through the Tinker Lab that is housed in the library. The Tinker Lab is a space for students to explore new activities. Eventually Alfeo would like to meet every week with students who want to knit and learn something new.
Scholars strike out
How many years has the high school had a scholars bowl team? Buzz! Answer: this is the high school’s first year having a team. The team has gone to five tournaments so far out of the seven total as well as regionals at the end to finish up the scholars bowl season. The two coaches and sponsors of the scholars bowl team are Coach Carey McFann and Coach Rachael Bentley.
Remembering Phil Buntin
Phillip Buntin, former Garden City High School art teacher, passed away on Nov. 17. Buntin began working at in Garden City in 1978. He spent his entire working career at the school except for a short time working for Missouri schools. Buntin retired in 2007 from teaching and moved back to Missouri. Buntin was a great example of what teachers strive to be. Buntin was an eccentric teacher with many creative talents.
Buffaloes audition for Evita the musical
The drama department has had several successful and state-qualifying performances. This upcoming spring season GCHS will present a new musical titled, “Evita”. The music for this musical was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the lyrics and book by Tim Rice.
Nutcracker cast and crew set to perform
‘Tis the season for festivities and traditions to be celebrated throughout the town, nothing kicks off the holiday season better than ‘The Nutcracker.’ The classic is a biennial production that has been put on since 2002 by Steps Dance School of Garden City, led by Sabrina Rishel, along with about 100 youth dancers.
Sims moves on without a new ring
The number-two ranked Garden City Broncbusters and number one ranked East Mississippi Lions went head-to-head at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg, Kan. to crown the champion, at the 2018 annual National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Football Championship that took place on Nov. 29. Both teams have had a spotless record all season; Broncbusters going 10-0 and Lions going 11-0.
Cheerleaders off to Orlando Florida
A total of 6,242 miles, 11 Garden City High School cheerleaders, one football game, one parade, one week at Disney World. In December, a group of cheerleaders from GCHS will travel to Orlando, Florida to perform at half time at the Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium.
Hawks give back
Students ever feeling hungry or in need for a new outfit now have a great new program put on by Horace Good Middle School. Students were challenged by administrators to come up with service learning projects that would hopefully better the community and spread positivity.
