Lisa Loving has been “rockin’ the sweet tooth” in Garden City since March 1, 2014 with Loving’s Cakes. With the busiest season being in the winter months, they sell a variety of custom cakes, pastries, cookies, cupcakes, candies, puppy treats and special holiday goods. Each cake is individual, being priced according to detail and complexity of design. Everyday items range in price from $0.35 to $25.
For students failing a core class that they desperately need a credit for, there is a simple solution: semester school. However there are a few stipulations before a student could take one of these classes. First a student must have a grade between a 49.5 percent and a 59.4 percent in a core class. Then they must have been signed up before Jan. 14th. After a chat with their counselor the student will be signed up for semester school.
While most students were looking forward to winter break, some seniors were looking forward to their last day of high school. For a handful of seniors they’ve already graduated prior to the graduation at the end of the year. Seniors have the option to graduate at the end of their first semester their final year.
The first 2019 Prom Committee meeting was in action on Jan. 9. During that time the juniors on the committee decided on the theme for the upcoming event. The theme that has been chosen for this year’s prom will be “vintage carnival.” A theme selected from a varied few such as, casino, under the stars, and enchanted forest. These themes were put onto an online Google format that the committee of juniors could then vote from after the explanation to the theme was presented in front of the committee during the meeting.
The Garden City High School production of Hamlet has been nominated to perform at Nationals. This upcoming summer the GCHS drama department will travel to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln to showcase their talents in Shakespeare’s Hamlet among the best in the country. Garden City High School students received the invitation early January to perform at the International Thespian Festival the week of June 24 to 29.
Since the 2018-19 wrestling season began back in early December, Garden City High School coach Carlos Prieto has known that his team, while comprised mostly of underclassmen, still had plenty of talent. That became more apparent to the seventh-year head of the program on Friday and Saturday at the 61st edition of the prestigious Rocky Welton Wrestling Invitational held at The Garden.
Buffalo men’s and women’s bowling is stampeding into the 2019 season. This year’s teams are working and preparing to continue their state successes like the teams before them, in recent years. Teammates, girls and boys alike, are all hopeful and filled with anticipation for upcoming tournaments.
Day 1 of the 61st Rocky Welton Wrestling Invitational is in the books, and while there were a few surprises, many of the expected favorites moved on to Saturday’s championship matches being contested at The Garden.
The horn has sounded and swim season is well underway for the Buffs men’s swim team. Last school year was the first time Garden City has had a men’s swim team since the early 1990s, and finishing in a respectable third place in the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) championship meet to conclude their first season was a great building block for the future swimmers.
It’s no secret that the Rocky Welton Wrestling Invitational is the top high school tournament in Kansas. Most coaches would even say to win the Welton is more difficult than winning a state team championship. And for good reason.
