Lisa Loving has been “rockin’ the sweet tooth” in Garden City since March 1, 2014 with Loving’s Cakes. With the busiest season being in the winter months, they sell a variety of custom cakes, pastries, cookies, cupcakes, candies, puppy treats and special holiday goods. Each cake is individual, being priced according to detail and complexity of design. Everyday items range in price from $0.35 to $25.
“Service was very friendly and accommodating to what we wanted and the environment of the business was very laid back and welcoming” Jan Hagen said. Hagen has bought many cookies, brownies, and small cake rolls from Loving’s Cakes. She also purchased her daughter’s baby shower cake from there, being unicorn designed to fit the theme of the party. Patrick Dugan’s Coffee House previously stocked their cookies from Loving’s Cakes for almost four years, which seemed to be a town favorite. “I really enjoy the fact that Loving’s Cakes is supporting local businesses,” Kyler Bennett, arts and communications sophomore, said. Other than previously supplying Patrick Dugan’s Coffee House, they also sell to Porky’s Parlor in Syracuse and Holly, Colorado. “There is a new coffee shop opening up this year and they have talked to us about our items as well” Loving said.
She began baking alongside her uncle, owner of Sugar Pots Bakery in New Jersey, as a child. After graduating high school in Hereford, Texas in 1980, Loving worked as a cosmetologist before becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and working in the volunteer Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program while being a staff nurse at Monfort. Then, she applied at the Finney County Jail and began baking cakes from home.
“It all started with a three-tier birthday cake I made for my sister,” Loving said. “I loved being able to spread my artistic wings so to speak. I was having so much fun decorating cakes and making sure they tasted amazing that I decided to do some research and make it a business.” After working at the sheriff’s office, Loving began putting serious research, practice and dedication into baking. It was then that Loving’s Cakes was born, with the help of Loving’s husband, sister and staff. “We have a small staff that consists of family and a few amazing employees,” Loving said.
They take pride in knowing they produce amazing products using quality ingredients.
“Our customers come first and we are grateful they have been with us throughout this fantastic journey, we couldn’t do it without them,” Loving said.
Loving’s Cakes is located at 210 E. Spruce St., and are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays.
