February, the month known for pink and red hearts, more like the month of high school basketball.
The 2018-19 Buffaloes (boys) are coming off two wins this weekend beating both Guymon and Hays, and a loss to Dodge for an overall record of 11 wins and four losses. The Buffalo boys defeated Guymon 41-37 and Hays 50-39, narrowly losing to Dodge City in overtime 50-53.
Starting off with an explosive season the boys are getting back into the groove after a slim loss to Dodge.
“We have had some hard losses so far, but we are learning from them. We have a lot of seniors on the team, which means we are experienced and every one of us has the potential to be leaders,” Kelvon Bennet, senior forward, said.
This season has been one of the best for the boys in several years.
“We are having an above average year so far. We are 11 and four, which is the best record we’ve had in a long time,” Jacy Holloway, head boys basketball coach, said.
Overall the boys are having a successful season with hopeful postseason goals.
“We started our season 5-0 and had some goals and expectations of continuing our undefeated record, Holloway said, “although that didn’t happen, we still feel good about our goal of winning WAC and sub-state.”
The team has been playing together since they were freshman, considering the majority are seniors, and it shows.
“This season is going really good. As a team we have great chemistry, we play great with each other, and we all seem to know each other’s next move,” Carlos Acosta, junior guard, said.
Again, considering the large senior class, next year some things are going to have to change.
“We will definitely have to play some underclassman. As of right now we will only have three seniors next year. We will also be lacking in size so we will have to make some changes to our offensive philosophies,” Holloway said.
Although the team is senior packed everyone is contributing to the teams overall success.
“Everyone has a role to fill even if they don’t play that much; everyone is on board,” Acosta said.
“This year we have been getting great efforts by a lot of our players. Each player is a standout in their own way,” Holloway said.
