The Buffalo wrestling team is fresh off a fifth place finish at the biggest Rocky Welten Invitational held at Garden City high school.
The team also won the WAC, western athletic conference, championship finishing with a perfect record of seventeen wins and zero losses. As they come to a close of their regular season Alex Rodriguez is leading the team with twenty-six pins. Steven Sellers is leading in reversals with a staggering twenty-five, and Rodriguez also leads the teams in wins with an immense thirty-six.“Wrestling has changed my mentality by allowing me to see the maturity necessary to go to varsity tournaments and placing at them,” Sebastian Rodriguez, freshman said. “For the rest of my season my goal is to place at our last tournament this week. I will see results because I work my hardest at every practice and leave it all on the mat. Josh Janas, sophomore, is currently third of the team in reversals with fifteen, third in pins with seventeen, and fourth in wins with twenty-nine.“The last tournament I have wrestled in was the Rocky Welton,” Janas said. “I placed 5th and I went six and two which is nothing to complain about. I should have definitely wrested harder from the beginning. I put myself in a position to wrestle my way back to the top and place. Diago Hernández, Junior is currently in fourth place for reversals with ten, and third place in wins with thirty-two.
“I see myself as a team leader,” Hernandez said. “I always push my teammates to do better and work hard. I feel I performed well at the Rocky Welton. I placed fifth and I have no reason to be mad about it at all. Being one of the six Garden city placers felt really good and I was very proud of myself.”
After conquering the WAC conference and their biggest tournament, the Rocky Welton, out of the way the Buffaloes can focus on their next challenge. The regionals and state tournaments are coming up which is a the most important part of the season for many wrestlers.
