The Garden City High School’s Boys and Girls Basketball teams are heading towards the end of the season. The Girls Basketball team has a winning record of 11-7 and the boys also have a winning record at 13-5. These teams are entering the postseason as they work towards the Sub State championships.
On February 15, the basketball teams celebrated senior night. However, because of the Regional Wrestling Tournament happening in the Garden City High School gym, the basketball teams played at Horace Good Middle School in “The Old Garden.” The teams both played the Hays High School Indians and the girls lost, while the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity boys teams all won. In honor of playing at Horace Good Middle School, the old high school, the varsity teams played in throwback jerseys.
The varsity boys started the game hot putting everything in the bucket. Several of the threes that fell for the buffaloes were from Kyler Lamb, senior, who almost shot the lights out again. The boys played well passing and shooting well from inside and outside the paint. Defensive efforts held Hays to only 27 points in the first half. Pulling away in the third quarter senior, Jarrod Springston, and junior, Carlos Acosta, handled the ball well to secure the win over Hays.
“This season has been awesome,” Jarrod Springston, a health and trade academy senior, said. “The game against Hays was a great offense and defensive performance for the entire team.”
The varsity boys for the sixth straight game came out with the victory on top of the Hays High Indians with a score of 55-49. This victory secured the Western Athletic Conference championship for the Garden City High School boys basketball.
“It was extra rewarding to win the WAC championship because we had a chance to beat Hays at the old high school in throwback uniforms,” Jacy Holloway, head coach, said. “All those things made it special.”
On the other hand, the lady buff basketball players fell short of the win on Friday, February 15. The Lady Indians beat the Buffs by 11 with a final score of 35 to 46.
“I feel like we played good during the first half,” Elyssa Salazar, a health and trade academy senior, said. “Starting the second half, we just slacked off and they were able to score more points than we were.”
Both teams also competed at Liberal on Tuesday, February 19. The girls lost a tough battle against the Lady Redskins by twenty points, with a final score of 55-35. The Lady Buffs struggled in the second half and trailed the entire game. The GCHS girls basketball team will finish their regular season with a winning record of 11-9 and will begin postseason play.
The boys basketball team played a tough game against the Redskins on February 19. With the loss of a injured player Carlos Acosta, the Buffs and Redskins played a tight game. With only seconds left in the game, Lamb hit a three-pointer to close the gap. Then, Brody Sumner from Liberal, was called for a foul to put Lamb on the line. Lamb made both shots to tie the game and bring it to overtime. However, after the game ended, the foul was reviewed and decided that no contact was made. Yet, the Buffs still played into overtime. The Buffs played a stellar OT to end the game with a win, and their season with a 16-4 record. As if the win wasn’t
Special enough for the team, the game against the Liberal Redskins was Jacy Holloway’s 100th win with the Buffaloes.
Their outstanding record for the season also allowed the boys basketball team to host the first substate game against Liberal on February 27. The Buffs played the previously defeated Redskins.
