HAYS — The Garden City High School Lady Buffs golf team opened its 2019 season on a winning note Tuesday with a 22-stroke victory over Salina South at the Hays Invitational.
Playing at Smoky Hill Country Club in the 9-hole tournament, senior Alyssa McMillen fired a score of 40 to capture medalist honors by six shots. Host Hays was the next closest Western Athletic Conference school to the Lady Buffs with a total of 219 while Great Bend, and Liberal finished fourth, fifth and eighth in the field.
McMillen’s low round bested Sophia Garrison of Hays, who was second with a 46. GCHS teammates Ryan Warren (49), Grace Yi (51), Emma Keels and Rian Linenberger (both 54s) rounded out the four counting scores. Allie Sandoval completed the team’s scoring with a 67.
“I’m happy for the team win and for Alyssa to capture medalist honors, but we also have room to improve,” said GCHS coach Trent Specht.
Next up for the Lady Buffs will be the Dodge City Invitational on Sept. 12.
