Fisher, Sosa lead Buffs’ XC teams at Great Bend

GREAT BEND — Senior Ethan Fisher and freshman Jocelyn Sosa paced the Garden City Buffaloes boys and girls cross country teams to a pair of runner-up finishes on Thursday at the Great Bend Invitational, which was conducted over the Lake Barton layout.

Fisher captured individual medalist honors by clocking a time of 13:51.5, which was 2.4 seconds ahead of runner-up Noah Cole of Hutchinson. Great Bend captured team honors with just 21 points while the Buffs were second with 48 points.

Seniors Santiago Nunez and Mario Bustillos placed ninth and 10th, respectively, with times of 14:29.0 and 14:38.9. Another senior, Austin Hess, was 15th in a time of 14:50.9. Junior Brody Hoff was 17th in 15:01.2 and freshman Devin Chappel was 18th with a time of 15:04.6. Freshman Evan Gurrola placed 21st in a time of 15:16.5 while senior Jeeremy Garcia rounded out the team in 35th with a clocking of 16:19.7.

On the girls side, Sosa was impressive in her varsity debut with a time of 17:04.4 to finish behind individual winner Mayra Ramirez of Great Bend, who came in at 16:51.7. The Lady Buffs scored 56 points to finish well behind host champion Great Bend’s 19 points.

Maria Balderas was 12th with a time of 18:15.5 for the 2.4 mile layout. Senior Kaety Kohlhorst was 15th in 18:26.9. The remainder of the team consisted of Ana Casados (Sr., 21st, 19:08.8), Faith Stahlecker (Sr., 28th, 19:50.9), and Destiny Avila (Sr., 30th, 20:24.7).

Next up for the Buffaloes will be the Hesston Invitational on Sept. 12 with the run set to start at 3:30 p.m.
