WICHITA — The Garden City High School boys soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit Saturday to topple Western Athletic Conference foe Hays High, 3-1, to claim the fifth-place consolation bracket trophy of the Wichita South Titan Classic.
The victory improved the Buffs under first-year coach Josue Negron to 2-1. They will host the same Hays High Indians team at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo Stadium to open WAC play. The Buffs’ JV team will be on the pitch at 5 p.m.
Hays got on the board first with a goal in the 28th minute, but the Buffs came out strong in the second half, getting the tying goal from Hassan Ismail in the 43rd minute on an assist from Jesse Sotelo.
Sotelo got the game-winner in the 52nd minute with a nifty assist from Bryant Tamayo. The Buffs’ scoring was concluded in the 79th minute on a free-kick goal by Rodrigo Oropeza.
The Buffs out-shot the Indians by an incredible 26-1 margin, but had trouble finding the net on many potential goals.
