GIRLS GOLF
Senior Alyssa McMillen claimed her second consecutive medalist honor on Thursday by shooting a 4-over-par 75 at Mariah Hills Golf Course to win the Dodge City Invitational.
McMillen had steady nine-hole scores of 37-38 to win the individual honor by three shots as she paced the Lady Buffs to a runner-up team finish with 372 strokes, well back of winner Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s 347. The team total was well ahead of third-place Hays’ 393, as the Buffs garnered their second straight WAC tourney title. Dodge City and Great Bend were a distant sixth and seventh.
Grace Yi was the next low for the Buffs with a 97, Ryan Warren close behind at 98, Rian Linenberger at 102 for the final counting score. Also for the Buffs, Emma Kells had a 106, and Allie Sandoval a 131.
BOYS SOCCER
Garden City’s boys soccer team had to face the Hays Indians for the second straight time in a span of five days, and this once again the Buffs had to rally to claim a victory.
On Thursday, at Buffalo Stadium, the Buffs broke a scoreless first half with a goal by Rodrigo Oropeaza in the 42nd minute only to have Hays tie it with a goal in the 51st minute. That left it to freshman David Hernandez to score the game-winner in the 69th minute for the 2-1 victory.
The victory improved the Buffs’ early season record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. They travel to Hays on Tuesday (Sept. 16) to face TMP-Marian at 5 p.m.
