Senior Alyssa McMillen fired a 2-under-par 33 for 9-holes Monday to claim medalist honors at the Liberal/Western Athletic Conference tournament over the Willow Tree Golf Course layout.
McMillen won her third straight tournament, all against WAC opponents, to push the Lady Buffs to a winning team mark of 169 for the 9-hole event. That was 14 shots clear of runner-up Hays High.
Teammates Grace Yi and Emma Kells fired rounds of 43 to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, in the individual race. Ryan Warren had a 50 to round out the four counting scores for the Buffs. Allie Sandoval and Rian Linenberger had scores of 58.
“The girls have bought into a lot of what we’ve been teaching,” head coach Trent Specht said. “We’ve stressed putting and chipping and really focused on those areas in practice. The three upper classmen understand what it takes and the younger girls are improving a lot since the beginning of the season.”
Dodge City was third at 188, with Great Bend and Liberal a distant fourth and fifth with scores of 201 and 229.
The Lady Buffs will have 10 days to prepare for their own Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 26 at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. The tourney will tee-off at 1 p.m.
