Buffs’ Tuesday Roundup: Boys soccer wins in rout; Girls tennis 2nd at Dodge invite

Tuesday, Sept. 17

GCHS’ boys soccer and girls’ tennis teams were in action on Tuesday, with both enjoying an abundance of success.

BOYS SOCCER

The Garden City High School Buffaloes’ boys soccer team scored a season-high 10 goals on Tuesday en route to a 10-0 rout of Thomas More Prep-Marian in a match played at Hays.

The Buffs, under first-year coach Josue Negron, scored five goals in the opening 40 minutes and matched that number in the second half on the way to securing their fourth win of the season against just an opening-match loss.

Jesse Sotelo opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute, followed by a David Hernandez score in the 15th minute. They scored an own goal when the Monarchs allowed the ball to go into their own net in the 22nd minute. Bryant Tamayo scored the first of his two goals in the 30th minute and then Marvin Fierro took an assist from Jio Munoz in the 37th minute to complete the first-half handful of goals.

In the second half, goals came from Alex Macias (42nd minute), Tamayo (45th), Omar Acevedo (53rd), Leo Hernandez (60th) and JR Mata (64th).

The Buffs registered 25 shots on goal compared to just two for TMP-Marian.

The Buffs will return to action Thursday, Sept. 19, with a home match against Liberal. The Western Athletic Conference test will open with the JV pitch at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at approximately 6:45 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS

Sophomore Sage Riggs took advantage of the opportunity to play No. 1 singles along with her senior teammate Carson Linenberger on Tuesday, with both Lady Buffs reaching the finals of the division at the Dodge City Invitational.

Garden City coach Rod Robinson and Dodge City’s coach had agreed to let both players compete in the upper singles division, but Riggs did not earn any team points for the Buffs as a result of the Dodge City format.

Thus, Riggs’ 6-3 match win over Linenberger in the finals didn’t earn the Lady Buffs any extra team points, as Great Bend nabbed the team title with 27 points to 20 for the Lady Buffs.

“We were the best team there,” said GCHS’ Robinson of his team, which also garnered a victory at No. 2 doubles and a runner-up finish in No. 1 doubles. “We only could count three of our four division entries and it certainly didn’t seem to be the fairest way of apportioning points.”

While Riggs went 5-0 during the tourney, Linenberger finished with a 4-1 mark.

Robinson rearranged the doubles partners for the Dodge City tourney, and it paid off well as Brooke Ptacek and Ashleigh Chappel captured first in No. 2 doubles by going  4-1 while the No. 1 team of Hannah Kipp and Carole Galia took second, also finishing with a 4-1 mark.

Ptacek and Chappel defeated the Great Bend duo 6-4 in the championship match. Earlier the Lady Buffs had fallen to the same team, 4-6. Galia and Kipp had the reverse outcome, winning over the Great Bend No. 1 duo 6-5 (1) in pool play before dropping a 4-6 match in the finals.

Linenberger had defeated players from Meade (6-0), Dodge City Blue (6-1), Great Bend (6-3) and Liberal (6-3) before facing Riggs in the championship match. Riggs garnered wins over Hays (6-1), Cimarron (6-0), Liberal (6-3) and Great Bend (6-5, 3) before taking on Linenberger in the finals.

Kipp and Galia took wins over Meade (6-0), Dodge City Blue (6-3), Great Bend (6-5, 1), Liberal (6-0) before dropping the final match to Great Bend (4-6). Ptacek and Chappel defeated Meade (6-0), Dodge City Blue (6-0), lost to Great Bend (4-6), beat Dodge City Red (6-1) in the semifinals and then topped Great Bend (6-4) in the championship match.

“We had a really good day, and in most cases if the scoring had been done properly we would have brought home the first-place finish,” Robinson said.

The Lady Buffs will next be in action on Monday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Haysville-Campus for a 3 p.m. round-robin tournament.
