Across the board, the Garden City Lady Buffs tennis team took second-place in each of the four divisions Monday at the Haysville-Campus Invitational.
Thus, the Lady Buffs took second in the team race with 12 points while host Campus, which took 3 of 4 matches from Garden, captured the team title with 16 points. Wichita Northwest was third with 7, Dodge City fourth with 5 and Wichita South fifth with 5 points in the round-robin event.
Carson Linenberger went 3-1 in her No. 1 singles division, losing only to Campus, 8-4; while also defeating Dodge City (8-2), Wichita Northwest (8-1) and Wichita South (8-2). Sage Riggs was runner-up at No. 2 singles, dropping a tiebreaker 7-8 (5) to Campus’ player. She then reeled off three convincing wins, over Dodge City (8-2), Wichita Northwest (8-1) and Wichita South (8-0).
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Hannah Kipp and Carole Galia went 3-1 to place second. They were the only Buffs to defeat Campus, winning an 8-4 match. They then defeated Dodge City, 8-4, before falling 0-8 to Wichita Northwest. They finished with an 8-2 win over Wichita South.
The No. 2 doubles team of Ashleigh Chappel and Brooke Ptacek went 3-1, falling to Campus, 5-8, beating Dodge City (8-4), Wichita Northwest (8-1) and Wichita South (8-3).
The Buffs will return to the courts on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they host their own invitational at the GCHS Tennis Complex. Play is expected to begin at about 9 a.m.
