Lady Buffs sets sights on 6A state volleyball tourney

Thus far, every goal that was set back in the summer and pre-season practices has been accomplished for the Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes volleyball team. Winning the Maize and McPherson Invitational tournaments for the first time. Going undefeated in the Western Athletic Conference (10-0) and claiming their ninth straight WAC championship on their home court. Claiming their fifth consecutive Class 6A sub-state championship, thus ensuring another trip to the state tournament. All that is now in the past, and all that lays in front of the Lady Buffs are the remaining two goals – 1) Make it out of Pool Play on Friday to Saturday’s semifinals and then win a state volleyball championship for the first time in school history.

The 2019 boys soccer season came to an end Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Wichita Heights when the Buffaloes were blanked, 3-0, by the Falcons in the Class 6A Regional semifinals.

Cross country teams meet, exceed early expectations in advance of state meet

When the Garden City High School cross country teams gathered in mid-August to begin their preseason workouts, veteran head coach Krista Linenberger was assured of two things. First, she knew she had some experienced runners on the boys side in seniors Ethan Fisher, Santiago Nunez-Gonzalez and Austin Hess. She also realized early on that there were several youngsters who showed promise from the summer off-season runs. It was much the same on the girls side for the Lady Buffs with seniors Kaetlin Kohlhorst, Destiny Avila and Ana Casados returning from the 2018 squad. Two months later and with the regular season completed two weeks ago, and then running in the Class 6A regional meet on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Wichita, Linenberger found the answers to those questions about her youthful prospects.

Volleyball wins sub-state; Boys XC 2nd at 6A regionals; Sosa nabs girls XC regional gold; Football, boys soccer playoffs set

The weekend of Saturday, Oct. 26 provided the Buffaloes athletic teams a couple of opportunities to qualify for state competition on Nov. 1 and 2, with volleyball and cross country teams in action at sub-state and regional events. In addition, the football and boys soccer teams had their postseason playoff pairings announced on Saturday as they begin play on Friday (football) and Tuesday (soccer).

Ethan Fisher and Jocelyn Sosa have little in common with their physical stature. Fisher, a senior, is tall and lanky while Sosa, a freshman, is short and slender. But they share a common bond and that is they love to run cross country races.

McMillen’s second-place finish leads Lady Buffs to 3rd in 6A state golf tourney

There's every good reason why the Garden City Lady Buffaloes golf team and coaches liked the new change in the Class 6A state golf tournament. Moving from a one-day, 18-hole format, to a two-day, 36-hole championship proved to be a positive for the Lady Buffs as they finished third in the team standings behind the individual runner-up finish of senior Alyssa McMillen, who lost a sudden-death playoff on the second hole after tying for first place with a 36-hole total of 157 (80-77).

McMillen tied 2nd, Lady Buffs team tied 4th after Day 1 of 6A state golf; boys soccer ends winless streak

Senior Alyssa McMillen and her Lady Buffs golf teammates battled high wind in excess of 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph on Monday on Day 1 of the Class 6A state golf tournament at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson. McMillen, who had shot a 73 earlier in the season during the Hutchinson Invitational on the same course, shot a 9-over-par 80 in Monday's first 18-hole round of the two-day, 36-hole tournament. This is the first year for the new format to be implemented from 18 to 36 holes.

Buffs unable to hold off Demons in Hatchet Game

Just when it looked as though the Garden City Buffaloes football team might pull off the upset of the season in western Kansas and Class 6A, things took a southward turn and the Dodge City Red Demons escaped with a 17-7 victory in the 122nd meeting of the two rivals and the 82nd meeting in the coveted Hatchet Game.

Lady Buffs volleyball sweeps WAC for 9th straight crown; girls tennis concludes season at state; boys soccer falls to North

The Garden City High School volleyball team lived up to their pre-billing as the overwhelming favorite at the 2019 Western Athletic Conference at the Oct. 19 league meet held at The Garden. The Lady Buffs swept all four of their matches in straight set triumphs, with only the early match against Liberal providing any heart-beat moments in the four matches. Coach Trista Bailey's squad opened with a hard-earned 28-26, 25-21 triumph over Liberal's Lady Redskins in the opening match of the day before rolling to victories over Hays High (25-10, 25-12), Great Bend (25-19, 25-16) and rival Dodge City (25-13, 25-12).
