Buffs Roundup, Wednesday, Oct. 2
GIRLS GOLF
While the Garden City High School Lady Buffs golf team didn’t get to finish the 18 holes at Wednesday’s Wichita North Invitational, they were still good enough to place second in the 12-team tournament, which was halted after 13 holes due to lightning.
Senior Alyssa McMillen once again paced the Lady Buffs, finishing second overall by virtue of her 1-over-par score for the 13 completed holes. She finished behind Andover’s Madison Slayton, who was even-par while another Andover golfer, Alivia Nguyen was 3-over to place third.
Garden City also got counting scores from Ryann Warren (+10), Grace Yi (+11) and Emma Kells (+20) to finish at +46 for the tourney. Andover won with a team score of +26 over par.
Rounding out the Lady Buffs’ scoring was Rian Linenberger (+23) and Allie Sandoval (+27). The tournament was played at Sim Park Golf Course.
The Lady Buffs were competing Thursday, Oct. 3, in the Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park Golf Course, site of the Class 6A state tournament later in the month.
GIRLS TENNIS
Garden City’s Lady Buffs tennis team traveled the entire width of the state of Kansas Wednesday to compete in the Gardner-Edgerton quadrangular.
While team scores were not kept, the Lady Buffs got first-place finishes from its two doubles teams — Carson Linenberger and Sage Riggs at No. 1 and Hannah Kipp and Ashleigh Chappel at No. 2. Both went 3-0.
Linenberger and Riggs, paired together in doubles for the first time this season after playing singles the early half of the campaign, swept past their three opponents — Gardner-Edgerton in a tight battle (8-7, 7-3 tiebreaker); Baldwin (8-4) and Perry-Lecompton (8-0).
Kipp and Chappel defeated Gardner-Edgerton (8-6), Baldwin (8-7, 7-4 tiebreaker) and Perry-Lecompton (8-0).
In singles play, Carole Galia played No. 1 and went 2-1 to place second. She lost to Gardner-Edgerton (0-8) before defeating Baldwin (8-6) and Perry-Lecompton (8-5). Brooke Ptacek at No. 2 singles went 1-1-1, with her final match ending in a 4-4 tie when it was called due to rain. She had defeated Gardner-Edgerton (8-7, 10-8 tiebreaker) but lost to Baldwin (1-8).
The Lady Buffs were competing Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Hutchinson Invitational.
