GIRLS GOLF
If there were two sure things this fall in Western Athletic Conference girls golf, it was that the Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes team would take first place while GCHS senior Alyssa McMillen was going to claim each individual title of the five league tournaments.
Those two items were assured on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Stonebridge Golf Club in Great Bend, where the Lady Buffs shot a 371 to ease past runner-up Hays (for the fifth time this fall), which was six shots back at 377.
McMillen, meanwhile, shot a 79 on a windswept afternoon to claim the individual title with her fifth straight league tourney win in her final campaign. It was her second consecutive Player of the Year honor for the Dodge City Community College-bound McMillen.
“I’m proud of Alyssa and all the girls as they’ve progressed throughout the last month,” said Trent Specht, GCHS head coach who earned WAC Coach of the Year honors.
Senior Grace Yi shot an 89 to place third individually at Great Bend while freshman Ryann Warren had a 100 to place ninth. Emma Kells had a 103 to round out the four counting scores while Allie Sandoval and Rian Linenberger finished with scores of 110 and 112, respectively.
The Lady Buffs will head into the postseason on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Class 6A regional in Wichita to be played at Macdonald Park Golf Course. The top 3 teams and top 10 individuals not otherwise qualified will advance to the Class 6A state tournament on Oct. 21-22 at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson.
ALL-WAC
Senior Alyssa McMillen’s perfect 5-for-5 WAC fall golf season resulted in her being named WAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
McMillen, who capped off her WAC season with a 79 at Great Bend on Thursday, was joined on the all-WAC first team by teammates Grace Yi, who finished fourth in the individual standings and Ryann Warren, who occupied the sixth and final spot.
Emma Kells, who was eighth, and Rian Linenberger, who was 11th, earned honorable mention honors. McMillen, Yi and Kells are seniors.
Joining McMillen on the first team were Sophia Garrison and Taleia McCrae of Hays, and Cailee McMullen of Great Bend.
McMillen earned 15 points for each of her five wins to finish with 75 points while Garrison was a distant second with 66 points. McCrae was next with 64 points while Yi had 56.5 points. Warren had 46.5 points.
BOYS SOCCER
Garden City High School’s boys soccer team road trip to Liberal on Tuesday, Oct. 8, resulted in a scoreless tie with the Redskins.
The Western Athletic Conference match result left the Buffaloes with a 6-4-1 overall record and they are 3-3-1 in the WAC. They will play their final WAC game on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Buffalo Stadium. The junior varsity pitch is set to begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity to begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Freshman goalkeeper Chris Barragan finished with five saves off nine Liberal shots while the Buffs registered seven shots with the Redskins’ Levi Flores making three saves.
