VOLLEYBALL
On a night that honored Garden City High School’s senior volleyball players as well as bringing awareness to breast cancer research through Play Pink Night, the Lady Buffaloes found time to sweep past Ulysses and Dodge City in a triangular at The Garden.
The Lady Buffaloes, ranked No. 5 in Class 6A by the Kansas Volleyball Coaches Association this week, easily dispatched Ulysses in straight sets by scores of 25-7, 25-14. They then topped Dodge City, again in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17.
In the opening set against Dodge City, the Lady Buffs trailed 14-16 before rolling to an 11-2 spree to win the first set and then completed the sweep.
“We missed quite a few serves tonight, but overall I thought they played well,” said GCHS coach Trista Bailey. “Our offense was hitting over .500 and our kids really enjoyed having so much support from their peers and community.”
The twin victories improved the Lady Buffs’ season record to 21-3. They head to McPherson for the Lady Bullpups’ Invitational on Sat., Oct. 12. They are seeded third and will be in Pool Play with Class 5A-ranked Goddard (23-3), Nickerson (21-8) and Hutchinson (16-12). In the other Pool will be Garden Plain, McPherson, Bishop Carroll and Salina South.
Goddard and Bishop Carroll are ranked Nos. 7 and 9 in Class 5A, Nickerson is No. 4 in Class 4A, and Garden Plain is No. 4 in Class 2A.
Following the McPherson tournament, the Lady Buffs will have a week to prepare for the Western Athletic Conference championship on Oct. 19, which they will host and be seeking their ninth consecutive league title.
BOYS SOCCER
Bone-chilling temperatures and high wind produced inclement weather conditions for Thursday’s Western Athletic Conference soccer finale for the Buffaloes boys team.
Even with a home-pitch advantage, the Buffs couldn’t come up with an offense that produced scoring and the result was a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Great Bend, a team they had beaten 3-0 on Oct. 1 in Great Bend.
The winning goal came from Great Bend’s Humberto Alonzo in the 85th minute, or fifth minute of the overtime which was played with the sudden death golden goal format (first team to score wins).
The Buffs finished with just five shots on goal, three corner kicks and freshman keeper Chris Barragan recorded five saves. Great Bend had eight shotds, six corner kicks and keeper Daniel Cervantes had three saves.
Thursday’s loss left the Buffs with a season record of 6-5-1 and concluded WAC play with a 3-4-1 record. They are slated to play on Monday, Oct. 14, in the Wichita North Cup against an opponent and time to be determined.
The Buffs still have one regular-season home match remaining, that being on Oct. 21 when they host TMP-Marian of Hays on Senior Night.
