Winter sports practices officially began the week of Nov. 18 and the season openers for all sports will start anew in December, with boys swimming, girls and boys basketball, wrestling and girls and boys bowling occupying the athletic schedule over the next few months.

Lady Buffs’ McMillen, Karlin named to 6A All-State teams
A pair of Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes athletes have been named to their respective all-state teams for their 2019 performances of the just recently completed fall seasons. Alyssa McMillen, the runner-up in Class 6A at the state girls golf tournament, was one of six players named to the All-State first team in a vote of the Kansas Golf Coaches Association. Reagan Karlin, a senior outside hitter for the Lady Buffs volleyball team, was chosen to the first team Class 6A squad by the Kansas Volleyball Association.

Two seniors, a junior and a sophomore football players for the Buffaloes of Garden City High School were named to the 2019 all-Western Athletic Conference football first team, announced Thursday, Nov. 14.

Juniors Lares, Carillo named all-WAC in boys soccer
With a youthful roster full of many underclassmen, the 2019 Garden City Buffaloes boys soccer team found itself battling some of the state's top teams in Western Athletic Conference opponents Dodge City and Liberal. After going through the regular season with a 3-4-1 WAC record, which put them in third place, the Buffs suffered an early exit in the Class 6A regional semifinals to end the season 7-9-1. Two of the underclass Buffs, who will return for their senior season in 2020, were named to the all-WAC first team. The honors were bestowed upon juniors Moses Lares and Jairo Castillo.
Lady Buffs’ Remi Vargas voted WAC volleyball Player of the Year
In her final season of playing for the Garden City High School volleyball team, senior setter Remi Vargas seemed to save her best for her finale of playing for the Lady Buffaloes. Playing the all-important setter position, Vargas was a key component of the Lady Buffs highly-successful season, which included winning the Western Athletic Conference title for the ninth straight season. For her efforts, Vargas, a 5-foot-4-inch performer, was named the WAC Player of the Year, marking the second straight season for a Lady Buffs player to be so honored, following her teammate Reagan Karlin's honor for 2018.
Fall sports teams see end of seasons in volleyball, XC, football
The first two days of November, along with the time change from Daylight Savings to Standard time over the weekend, brought an end to the fall sports season for Garden City High School teams. Volleyball, cross country and football all saw the curtain drop on the fall schedules as the Lady Buffs volleyball competed in the Class 6A state tournament in Salina, the girls and boys cross country ran at the state meet in Lawrence while the football team dropped its first-round 6A playoff match-up at Topeka High.
