Juniors Lares, Carillo named all-WAC in boys soccer

BUFFS ROUNDUP: Wed., November 13, 2019

With a youthful roster full of many underclassmen, the 2019 Garden City Buffaloes boys soccer team found itself battling some of the state’s top teams in Western Athletic Conference opponents Dodge City and Liberal.

After going through the regular season with a 3-4-1 WAC record, which put them in third place, the Buffs suffered an early exit in the Class 6A regional semifinals to end the season 7-9-1.

Two of the underclass Buffs, who will return for their senior season in 2020, were named to the all-WAC first team.

The honors were bestowed upon juniors Moses Lares and Jairo Castillo. Lares scored 2 goals and registered 2 assists while Carillo finished with 1 of each.

League champion Dodge City, which eventually placed third in the Class 6A state tournament and had a 7-1 WAC mark, had three players named to the first team, including Player of the Year Alan Lopez. Runner-up Liberal also placed three on the first team.

The Buffs’ youth movement was even more evident when freshmen Leo and David Hernandez were selected to the second team for the WAC.

Coach of the Year honors went to Dodge City’s Saul Hernandez.
