A pair of Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes athletes have been named to their respective all-state teams for their 2019 performances of the just recently completed fall seasons.
Alyssa McMillen, the runner-up in Class 6A at the state girls golf tournament, was one of six players named to the All-State first team in a vote of the Kansas Golf Coaches Association.
Reagan Karlin, a senior outside hitter for the Lady Buffs volleyball team, was chosen to the first team Class 6A squad by the Kansas Volleyball Association.
McMillen, who won , was named along with state champion Julia Misemer of Blue Valley West, Libby Green of Mill Valley, Tess Roman of Shawnee Mission East, Victoria Klausner of Olathe Northwest and Quincy Hepler of Shawnee Mission East.
McMillen and Misemer had tied for the top spot in the 36-hole state tournament at Hutchinson’s Carey Park in mid-October, with Misemer claiming the medalist honor by winning a sudden-death playoff from McMillen.
During her stellar senior season, McMillen captured six tournament titles (including all 5 WAC events), and was second in four others. Her 18-hole stroke average was just a shade over 75 shots.
She was the catalyst that led the Lady Buffs to a third-place finish at the Class 6A state tournament, where the team moved into a trophy-winning spot on the second day of the new 36-hole state format.
The Lady Buffs’ senior plans to attend Dodge City Community College in the fall of 2020 to play for the Lady Conquistadors.
For Karlin, the volleyball honor caps off a stellar senior campaign in which she helped the Lady Buffs to a 33-5 season record, the third most wins in a single season in program history.
A 6-foot-1-inch outside hitter, Karlin registered 393 kills her senior year and finished with 1,352 for her four-year career.
She was a three-time all-Western Athletic Conference selection, including the 2018 WAC Player of the Year. She earned Class 6A all-state first team honors during her sophomore, junior and senior campaigns and was selected to the 2019 Class 6A all-tournament team.
On Nov. 13, Karlin signed an NCAA Division I national letter-of-intent to attend and play for Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
