The Garden City High School girls and boys basketball teams opened their 2019-20 seasons on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Guymon, Okla. Both teams came up on the short end of close scores in their opening games.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
In their season-opening game on the road, the Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes were unable to sustain a first-half lead and fell to the Guymon, Okla., Lady Tigers, 60-50, on Tuesday night in Guymon.
The Lady Buffs got off to a strong start, opening up a 16-9 lead after one quarter and extending it to 31-22 at halftime. But the second half was a different story as Guymon held a narrow 17-14 margin in the third quarter to trim the lead to 45-39. The fourth quarter proved to be the final decider in this one as Guymon outscored the Lady Buffs 19-5 to finish out with the five-point triumph.
Julie Calzonetti scored 13 points to lead the way and Amaya Gallegos added 11 for the lone double-figure scorers.
The Lady Buffs have little time to regroup as they will host the Roundball Classic starting Thursday with a 6 p.m. tipoff against Palmer Ridge, Colo., at The Garden. They will follow that with home games on Friday against Coronado, Colo., and then will take on Scott City Saturday in the 4:15 p.m. contest.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Guymon, Okla. 41, Garden City 35
A sluggish start was the big factor in the 41-35 Tuesday night loss at Guymon, Okla., for the Garden City High School boys basketball team in their season opener.
The Buffs trailed 14-6 after one quarter and were down 23-12 at halftime after another six-point cold spell in the second period. They did warm up some in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 23-18 over the final 16 minutes, including 13-8 in the fourth quarter to pull within the final six-point margin.
Luke Tolbert was the lone Buffalo to reach double-figure scoring with 10 points.
The Buffs have just one day of practice to prepare for the three-day Roundball Classic which they will host at The Garden starting Thursday. They will open the Classic against Palmer Ridge, Colo., in a tipoff slated for about 7:45 p.m. following the Lady Buffs opener. On Friday, with the same starting times, the Buffs will take on Coronado, Colo., and then conclude the Classic on Saturday with a 7:45 p.m. tipoff against the Scott City Beavers.
