BUFFS ROUNDUP: Friday, February 7, 2020

WRESTLING

On Senior Night, with 11 upperclassmen making one of their final appearances at The Garden, the Garden City Buffaloes wrestling team had the proper send-off for the group with perhaps their best showing of the season, overwhelming Hays, 67-12, in their final Western Athletic Conference dual match.

The dual victory improved the Buffs’ season record in duals to 13-3 and left them at 2-2 in the WAC. With an injury-plagued lineup much of the middle portion of the season, the Buffs had lost WAC matches against both Dodge City and Great Bend while beating Liberal earlier.

Additionally, the Lady Buffs wrestling team won all three of its matches against Hays, to finish with an 18-0 triumph. All three wins came via falls.

Thursday, though, belonged to the Buffs as they won the first 12 matches (2 by forfeit) before dropping the final two matches of the evening.

Silas Pineda (120), Jacob Holt (138), Erick Dominguez (145), Josh Janas (152), Jared Arellano (160), Alan Chairez (170), Alex Rodriguez (182) and Ryan Wessels (195) all recorded victories by falls. Dominguez had the fastest one just 35 seconds into his match.

For the Lady Buffs, they will send a contingent to the all-class regional qualifying tournament in McPherson on Feb. 14 and 15. There, the top six wrestlers qualify for the first girls state championship which will be Feb. 27 at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. There are only two regionals for girls, with six qualifying in each weight class for state.

There are 11 weight divisions for the girls as opposed to 14 for the boys, with those being 101-lbs., 109-lbs., 116-lbs., 123-lbs., 130-lbs., 136-lbs., 143-lbs., 155-lbs., 170-lbs., 191-lbs., 235-lbs.
