Buffs’ basketball drops both boys, girls tests at Hugoton; girls bowlers prevail, boys fall

BOYS

The Garden City High School boys basketball team saw its mini two-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday night with a heartbreaking 74-67 overtime loss on the road at Hugoton.

The game was tied at 64-all at the end of regulation in a game that saw an astonishing 28 3-point baskets made, 14 by each team.

In a high-scoring battle, the Buffs took a 19-14 lead at the end of one quarter, only to have the home Eagles score 24 points in the second against 19 for the Buffs to send the game into a 38-all knot at intermission.

The third quarter was close, too, with the Buffs having a 15-14 edge to narrowly lead 53-52 heading to the final eight minutes. Hugoton had a 12-11 edge to tie the game at the end of regulation. Hugoton had leads as much as six and the Buffs were ahead by as many as four in the fourth quarter of the back-and-forth battle.

The 14 treys were the highest in the decade of coach Jacy Holloway’s head coaching of the Buffs. There is no record available how this matches up with past GCHS performances.

Azavier Williams, who had six of the 3-pointers, had a career-high 25 points to pace the Buffs (7-8 overall). Isaac Flores, who was right behind with a handful of 3-pointers, finished with 15 and Luke Tolbert contributed 11, including a trio of baskets behind the arc.

The Buffs will return to action quickly on Thursday night when they host the Ulysses Tigers in a non-league game postponed a couple of weeks ago due to bad weather. The varsity game will tip-off at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the junior varsity game.

The busy week for the boys wraps up Friday when they hit the road to Great Bend to face the Panthers at approximately 7:45 p.m. in a Western Athletic Conference match-up.

GIRLS

For the Lady Buffs’ basketball game against Hugoton Tuesday night, it was the Eagles’ talented freshman class that proved to be the difference in a 48-37 setback for coach Matt Pfeifer’s squad.

The Lady Buffs struggled in the early going against the pressure defense employed by the Lady Eagles. It was 13-7 in favor of Hugoton after one quarter and the lead was extended to 28-13 by halftime. The Buffs did outscore the Eagles 24-19 in the final 16 minutes of play to pull close to single digits deficit.

Freshman Amaya Gallegos, with four 3-point baskets, led the way for the Lady Buffs (8-8) with 14 points. The Lady Buffs will next be in action Friday when they travel to Great Bend for a 6 p.m. tip-off in Western Athletic Conference action.

BOWLING

GIRLS

Garden City High School’s girls bowling team put themselves into a strong position in pursuit of a Western Athletic Conference championship by capturing 9 of 11 possible points Tuesday in a dual match at Great Bend’s Walnut Bowl.

The Lady Buffs began the day in the American 10-Pin format, by winning all 3 individual games (761-642/736-630/774-763) and total pins of 2,271-2,035. That left the Baker format where the Lady Buffs dropped 2 of 3 games by margins of 172-179/192-182/171-190.

Sophomore Holly Bridges led the individual series portion for the Lady Buffs, rolling games of 189-203-220 for a 612 series, placing her second overall behind Great Bend’s Paige Wagner’s 625 (255 final game). But Bridges’ teammates Karly Larson and Angelina Leeper took third and fourth individually with totals of 553 and 550. Lily Ann Leeper and Britney Cox added totals of 476 and 474.

The Lady Buffs have just one day to prepare for their next match, a WAC dual at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Hard Rock Lanes when they entertain rival Dodge City on Senior Night.

BOYS

It seems as though both Garden City and Great Bend’s boys bowling teams have been battling for many years for supremacy in the Western Athletic Conference.

On Tuesday, the Buffaloes traveled to the Panthers’ home lanes but could manage winning only 5 of the 11 available points.

The Buffs opened the match with a 786-748 win in the American 10-Pin format, but dropped the next two games (803-860) and (811-892) and total pins 2,400-2,500. Individually, Great Bend went 1-2 behind the 674 of Bryce Moore and 635 of Dalton Murphy while the Buffs were led by Caleb Carr (607), Kaden Whitehurst (594) and Jayce Farr (592), placing third, fourth and fifth.

If there was a bright spot for the Buffs, it came in the 3-game Baker format, where they won all three games by margins of 226-184, 172-159 and 196-192 with the total series at 594-535. Still, Great Bend had built a sizable lead from the American 10-Pin format to finish atop the overall pin count ahead 3,035 to Garden’s 2,994, 41 pins in front.

The Buffs will be home on Thursday, Feb. 13, to host rival Dodge City at 3 p.m. at Hard Rock Lanes and it will be Senior Night.
