Homegrown Vital-Caro named Buffs’ soccer coach for girls, boys programs
Jose Vital-Caro was raised in Garden City, is a graduate of Garden City High School and has been employed at USD 457 at Kenneth Henderson Middle School for the past two years. He also has served as an assistant coach at the high school while coaching the KHMS Lady Falcons. Now, he has been named the head coach for both the Buffaloes’ girls and boys programs and started his duties on March 2.
Three Buffs named to All-WAC wrestling team; 5 make 2nd team
Three Garden City High School wrestlers, who helped the Buffaloes to a fourth-place team finish at the Class 6A state tournament, were named to the 2019-20 All-Western Athletic Conference first team, announced Tuesday by the conference schools.
Whitehurst rolls perfect 300, claims 6A boys bowling title; Boys, girls teams claim 3rd; Larson takes 3rd in girls 6A state
Kaden Whitehurst became the second Garden City High School boys bowler to win a Class 6A state individual title Thursday at North Rock Lanes in Wichita to lead the Buffs to a third-place team finish. Karly Larson, meanwhile, took third individually in the girls division to help the Lady Buffs also to a third-place team finish.
Girls, boys basketball seasons end with sub-state setbacks
The Garden City High School girls and boys basketball seasons came to an earlier-than-desired end this week with Class 6A sub-state setbacks in respective semifinal road games. The Lady Buffs were eliminated from further postseason play on Tuesday, March 3, with a 53-45 loss at Hutchinson while the Buffs’ boys traveled to Derby on Wednesday, March 4, and suffered a 68-40 setback to the Panthers. Both teams finished their overall seasons with 10 wins and 11 losses.
Holt’s 3rd state title leads Buffs to 4th place team finish at 6A state wrestling
In its illustrious history, dating back more than 50 years, few Garden City High School wrestlers have won more than two individual state championships. In fact, it didn’t happen until 2015 when Michael Prieto won his third, as did Tevin Briscoe, to become the first three-peat wrestlers for the Buffaloes program. Prieto would go on and embed himself into his own category in 2016 when he won his fourth straight gold medal. But now the Buffaloes’ elite fraternity has a new member in Jacob Holt, who captured his third individual title on Saturday, Feb. 29, at Hartman Arena in Park City. And he did so in dramatic fashion.
