WRESTLING
Three Garden City High School wrestlers, who helped the Buffaloes to a fourth-place team finish at the Class 6A state tournament, were named to the 2019-20 All-Western Athletic Conference first team, announced Tuesday by the conference schools.
First team selections for the Buffs of coach Carlos Prieto were senior Silas Pineda at 120 pounds (39-12), junior Steven Sellers at 132 pounds (32-14), and senior Alex Rodriguez at 170 pounds (25-8). Sellers and Rodriguez placed third, respectively, in their weight divisions at state.
Making the second team for the Buffs were freshmen Trae Torres at 106 pounds and Ryan Heiman at 126 pounds, Jacob Holt at 138 pounds, Josh Janas at 152 pounds, Jared Arellano at 160 pounds and Ryan Wessels at 195 pounds. Holt and Arellano are seniors while Janas and Wessels are juniors.
The Buffs went 2-2 in the WAC dual matches this season. Great Bend won the WAC at 4-0 and Dodge City was runner-up at 3-1. Wrestler of the Year went to Gage Fritz of Great Bend at 145 pounds while Coach of the Year honors went to Tate Lowe of Dodge City.
