Three former Garden City High School golfers and current Buffs’ coach Trent Specht opened play Tuesday at the 110th Kansas Amateur Men’s Championship.
The tournament is being played at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan. There are 140-plus players in the field, who will play 36 holes of qualifying stroke play Tuesday and Wednesday and then determine the low 64 scores to advance to match play which will run Thursday through Sunday.
Leading the way for the former Buffs was 2017 and 2019 Class 6A state individual champion Sion Audrain, who also captured the 2018 Kansas Amateur title at Firekeeper Golf Course.
Audrain fired a 3-under-par 69 to share the top spot after the first day of qualifying. Sean Thayer, who was the first Garden City golfer to win the Kansas Amateur in 1999, shot a 77 on nines of 42-35 while current GCHS coach Trent Specht was another two shots back at 79. Logan Durst rounded out the local contingent with an 80.
With just a few golfers remaining on the course late in the day Tuesday, Thayer was tied for 70th while Specht was in a logjam at 93rd.
