Buffs’ boys soccer give new coach first win in opening game

BUFFALOES’ BOYS SOCCER: Thursday, Sept. 2, 2020

It was just the type of opening game that a new coach might have expected, and eventually hoped for.

The Garden City Buffaloes’ boys soccer team produced a 2-1 victory over the Hays High Indians on the road Tuesday, Sept. 1, in both the season opener for 2020 as well as the debut as new head coach Jose Vital.

In addition, it was the opening game in the always-tough Western Athletic Conference and gave the Buffs an injection of confidence. They will have nearly a week to prepare for their opening game in the Goddard Tournament, which begins on Monday, Sept. 7.

Leo Hernandez put the Buffs on the scoreboard early with a goal and then not long after drilled home another goal to make it 2-0 when he got an assist from Rodrigo Oropeza. That score stood up to halftime.

In the second half, Hays scored just 90 seconds into the final 40 minutes on a goal by Cesar Cruz to slice the lead in half, but the Buffs’ defense held strong over the final 38 minutes to close out the game and secure the victory.
