GCHS CROSS COUNTRY: Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020
Senior Brody Hoff and sophomore Devin Chappel finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the individual standings on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Great Bend Invitational cross country meet to lead the Buffs to a third-place finish among seven competing teams.
Sophomore Jocelyn Sosa, meanwhile, took fifth place individually in the girls division, but the Lady Buffs team struggled to a sixth-place finish.
Hoff clocked a time of 17:42.96 to place behind the winning time of 16:33.50 set by Tanner Lindahl of Buhler. Great Bend’s Kaiden Esfeld was the top WAC runner, placing second in 17:03.57. A pair of Bishop Carroll runners took third and fourth. Chappel’s time was 17:50.59 was not far behind Hoff’s mark.
Next highest finish for the Buffs was Evan Gurrola in 21st with a time of 18:58.30. Kenji Craig was 24th in 19:07.68 and Joel Contreras was in 27th with a time of 19:14.53. Isaiah Casados rounded out the Buffs’ marks with a time of 19:20.61 for 30th place.
The team scoring saw the Buffs third with 81 points, behind Bishop Carroll’s 41 and Buhler’s 47 points. Great Bend was a distant fourth with 100 while Hays High was fifth with 130 points for other WAC competing schools.
After Sosa’s top five finish, coach Krista Linenberger saw her team finishes with Armanda Baldera in 33rd at 23:56.13; Andrea Hernandez in 35th at 24:09.41 and Selah Hageman in 36th at 24:11.15.
The runners will next be in action on Sept. 10 when they travel to the Hesston Invitational.
