BUFFALOES BOYS SOCCER: Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020
A one-day postponement did little to dampen the spirits of the Garden City Buffaloes’ boys soccer team as they produced a thrilling 3-2 victory over Rose Hill Wednesday in the opening round of the Goddard Tournament at the Goddard Stadium.
Wednesday’s victory sends the Buffs into Thursday’s semifinal, scheduled for 6 p.m., against the winner of the late Wednesday game between Goddard and Buhler.
What proved to be the winning goal was scored by David Hernandez in the 65th minute which at the time gave the Buffs a 3-1 lead.
The score was tied at 1 at halftime as Rose Hill got on the scoreboard early in the sixth minute. Garden scored in the 28th minute on Rodrigo Oropeza’s goal.
The Buffs went up 2-1 after Leopoldo Hernandez drilled a goal in the 55th minute. Rose Hill cut its deficit to just one goal in the 71st minute.
In goal for the Buffs in the first half was Daniel Zamaripa, who had five saves while giving up one goal. Angel Guevara was in goal in the second half for new coach Jose Vital and he recorded six saves. The Buffs finished with 17 shots, split nearly evenly between the halves, 9 in the first and 8 in the second.
The victory improves the Buffs to 2-0.
