Buffs’ boys soccer reaches Goddard tourney finals, remains unbeaten

BUFFS’ BOYS SOCCER: Friday, Sept. 11, 2020

Garden City High School’s boys soccer team remained unbeaten in the early season schedule with a 2-1 victory Thursday over host Goddard at the Goddard Tournament.

The victory, which improved the Buffs to 3-0, sends the team into Saturday’s championship game against Goddard Eisenhower, which advanced with a 3-2 decision on penalty kicks over Haysville-Campus in the other semifinal.

The Buffaloes had opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 3-2 win over Rose Hill while Goddard had blanked Buhler 5-0 in its opener. The title game will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday at Goddard Stadium.

Goddard got on the scoreboard first, scoring in the fifth minute. The Buffs evened the score in the 15th minute on a goal by senior central mid-fielder Rodrigo Oropeza. That score stood up to halftime.

In the second half, it was a defensive battle and it wasn’t until the final minutes when sophomore mid-winger David Hernandez scored the winning goal for the Buffs.

Daniel Zamaripa and Angel Guevara split goalkeeper duties for the Buffs. Zamaripa saved 3 shots in the second half. Guevara, who played the first half and a portion of the second, recorded 4 saves. The Buffs’ offense had 15 shots on goal while Goddard was limited to 7 shots.
