Garden City High School’s girls tennis team provided new head coach Logan Bevis with his first team title on Saturday, Sept. 12, by capturing the Great Bend Invitational crown.
Sage Riggs and Brooke Ptacek earned individual titles at the No. 1 and 2 singles slots while the No. 1 doubles team of Ashleigh Chappel and Sydney Nanninga placed second. The No. 2 doubles team of Peighton Tull and Chloe Powell also finished second.
Those finishes provided the Lady Buffs with 65 points to easily outdistance runner-up Great Bend’s Red squad, which tallied 41 points. Dodge City was third with 39 points and Liberal fourth with 38 points. There were eight teams in the field.
The tourney format called for schools to be placed in two pools of 4 teams each, comprising three matches in each of the singles and doubles divisions.
Riggs was dominant throughout, as she defeated Ellinwood’s top player, 8-2; Great Bend Black, 8-2; and WaKeeney/Trego Comm., 8-2. In the cross-pool play, Riggs blanked Hoisington, 8-0, and then defeated WaKeeney, 8-3.
In No. 2 singles, Ptacek also went 3-0 in pool play defeating players from Ellinwood, 8-4; Great Bend Black, 8-1; and WaKeeney, 8-3. In cross pool play, she defeated players from Great Bend Red, 8-1, and WaKeeney, 8-2.
The Lady Buffs’ No. 1 doubles team of Chappel and Nanninga posted a 3-0 pool play record with wins over Ellinwood, 8-2; Great Bend Black, 8-1; and WaKeeney, 8-3. In cross pool play, the duo defeated Liberal, 8-4, before dropping the final match to Great Bend Red, 8-2.
Tull and Powell had the toughest matches of the day for the Lady Buffs, after posting a 3-0 mark in pool play. They owned wins over Ellinwood, 8-1; Great Bend Black, 8-4; and WaKeeney, 8-2. In the cross pool play, they edged Liberal, 8-6, before dropping an 8-4 match to Dodge City.
Next action for the Lady Buffs will be Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Dodge City Invitational.
