BUFFS’ BOYS SOCCER: Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020
It was the home opener and also Senior Night for the Garden City Buffaloes’ boys soccer team on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when they played host to the TMP-Hays Monarchs at Buffalo Stadium.
The Buffaloes, under first-year head coach Jose Vital, made it a memorable night as they rolled to a 10-0 “mercy rule” victory over the visitors in a game halted in the 52nd minute with that 10-goal advantage.
Junior Victor Adame led the attack for the Buffs, getting a hat-trick with three goals in a matter of 14 minutes in the last portion of the first half. Freshman Jonathan Chavez added two goals (17th minute and 42nd minute) while single goals were scored by senior Omar Acevedo (2nd minute), junior Jairo Carillo (5th minute), senior Hugo Retamoza (46th minute), sophomore Chris Barragan (51st minute) and the game-ender by sophomore Erick Tamayo.
In all, the Buffs pelted TMP goalkeepers with 31 shots in the 52 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Buffs’ defenders Daniel Zamaripa and Angel Guevara did not have any shots on goal to defend.
The victory pushes the Buffs’ early-season record to 3-1, having come off a 2-0 loss on Saturday to Goddard-Eisenhower in the finals of the Goddard Tournament.
Next up for the busy schedule will be a Western Athletic Conference road test at Liberal.
