GCHS girls tennis blitzes field at Dodge City Invitational, winning 3 of 4 divisions

LADY BUFFS TENNIS: Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020

Garden City High School’s girls tennis team continued its stellar play in the first week of competition by claiming its second straight team title on Tuesday at the Dodge City Invitational.

Following on the heels of its win on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Great Bend, the Lady Buffs scored 29 points, capturing the No. 1 and 2 singles titles along with the No. 2 doubles crown. The only non-winner was the No. 1 doubles team that finished third, losing just one match.

The dominant performance was led by No. 1 singles player Sage Riggs as the junior swept through her two Pool Play matches and then by capturing her semifinal match in a 6-2 win over Great Bend before rolling to a 6-1 win over Dodge City Red in the championship match. She lost only four games all day in her four matches.

The No. 2 singles player, Brooke Ptacek, also was impressive by winning all five of her matches to claim that division gold medal. She won over Liberal (6-2), Dodge City Blue (6-3) and Cimarron (6-0) in Pool Play before dispatching Meade 6-0 in the semifinals and Liberal, 6-3, in the finals. She lost just eight games in her five matches.

The No. 1 doubles team of Ashleigh Chappel and Sydney Nanninga went 4-1, finishing third. They posted a 3-0 Pool Play mark with wins over teams from Liberal (6-2), Dodge City Blue (6-2) and Cimarron (6-3). In the semis, perhaps the tightest match of the day, the Lady Buffs’ duo lost a heartbreaker, 6-4, to Dodge City Red. In the third place match, they defeated Cimarron, 6-2.

In the No. 2 doubles division, Rilee McGraw and Peighton Tull went 5-0 en route to their first-place finish.

The duo owned victories in Pool Play over Liberal (6-3), Dodge City Blue (6-1) and Cimarron (6-2). In the semis they dominated Great Bend (6-1) and then swept past Liberal (6-2) in the title match.

First-year coach Logan Bevis will take his squad back on the road on Saturday, Sept. 19, when they travel to the Valley Center Invitational.
