LADY BUFFS TENNIS: Monday, Sept. 21, 2020
Sage Riggs continued her strong performance of the 2020 high school girls tennis season by claiming first-place Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Valley Center Invitational.
Riggs, a junior, won all three of her matches to capture the No. 1 singles title that helped the Lady Buffs to a third-place team finish with 12 points in what head coach Logan Bevis said was the toughest competition the team had faced thus far this season.
In Pool Play, Riggs defeated Andover, 4-2, 4-2, before outlasting Maize South’s top player, 4-3 (2), 4-3 (2). In the championship match against the top seed from the opposite pool, Riggs went a marathon match with Maize High’s No. 1 player, defeating her 3-4 (2), 4-3 (2), 7-3 in the third-set tiebreaker.
The No. 2 doubles team of Rilee McGraw and Chloe Powell placed third, splitting their Pool Play matches when they dropped a 1-4, 1-4 match to Andover before flipping the score to beat Maize South, 4-1, 4-1. In the third-place match, they dropped host Valley Center, 4-3 (2), 3-4 (4) and 7-0 in the tiebreak third set.
Ashleigh Chappel and Sydney Nanninga placed fourth, losing to Andover, 0-4, 3-4 (1) and then defeated Maize South, 4-0, 4-1. Their bracket match saw them lose perhaps the toughest and longest match of the day, losing the first set 3-4 (3), winning the second set 4-3 (1) before dropping the tiebreak set, 9-11.
No. 2 singles player Brooke Ptacek had the toughest day of all, dropping matches to Andover (2-4, 1-4), Maize South (4-1, 2-4, 1-7) and Valley Center (1-4, 1-4).
The Lady Buffs were scheduled to travel to Haysville-Campus on Monday, Sept. 21, for the Lady Colts Invitational. They will play host to their own Lady Buffs’ Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the GCHS Tennis Complex.
