GCHS GIRLS TENNIS: Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020
It was an across-the-board second-place day for the Garden City Lady Buffs tennis team on Monday, Sept. 21, at the Haysville-Campus Round-Robin Tournament.
The Lady Buffs scored runner-up 3 points in all four divisions — No. 1 and 2 singles, and No. 1 and 2 doubles, to score 12 points and place second to champion Andover’s 14 points. Campus was third with 9 points, Goddard-Eisenhower fourth with 8 points and Dodge City in fifth with just 1 point.
Junior Sage Riggs suffered her first loss of the season to the No. 1 player from Goddard-Eisenhower in an 8-5 score, but won her other three matches over Andover (8-4), Dodge City (8-1) and Campus (8-0) to improve her season record to 16-1.
Brooke Ptacek went 2-2 and finished second with wins over Goddard-Eisenhower, 8-5; and Campus, 8-1; and falling in matches against Andover, 8-4; and Dodge City, 8-4.
The No. 1 doubles team of Ashleigh Chappel and Sydney Nanninga went 3-1 in their runner-up effort. They lost to Andover, 8-6; defeated Dodge City, 8-4; Godard-Eisenhower, 8-5; and Campus, 8-1.
Rilee McGraw and Chloe Powell also finished the day with a 3-1 mark and a second-place standing in No. 2 doubles. They lost to Andover, 8-4, but then rolled to wins over Dodge City (8-2), Goddard-Eisenhower (8-5) and Campus (8-6).
“The girls played hard and everyone got big wins over Campus, a regional opponent, in the last round,” said first-year head coach Logan Bevis.
Next action for the Lady Buffs will be on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they host their own invitational. Action gets under way at 9 a.m. at the GCHS Tennis Complex.
