Lady Buffs golf gets preview of state tourney site in Hesston

GIRLS GOLF: Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020

Garden City High School’s girls golf team got a sneak preview of the Class 6A state tournament site when they played in what originally was billed at the State Preview but instead turned into a triangular tournament.

On Tuesday, the Lady Buffs played at the Hesston Golf Course, which will host the state tourney in mid-October, but only 6A powerhouse Topeka-Washburn Rural and Dodge City, along with the Buffs, showed up.

As expected, Washburn Rural easily won the 18-hole event with a total of 319 as they captured the top three individual places with scores under 80. The Lady Buffs’ 374 total was two shots behind Dodge City’s 372, with sophomore Ryan Warren leading the way with an 87, which was good for sixth place.

Rian Linenberger also broke 90, shooting an 88 while Allie Sandoval was next with a 98 and Jerika Lopez followed with a 101. Hanna Plummer and Emma Ortiz had non-counting scores of 106 and 109. Kalissta Rhodes also played individually and came in with a 115.

Madelyn Luttjohann of Washburn Rural captured medalist honors with a 76.

Next up will be the regular-season ending Western Athletic Conference tournament at Great Bend on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The Class 6A regional qualifying tournament will be Oct. 12 at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City and the state meet in Hesston is set for Oct. 19-20.
