BOYS SOCCER: Friday, Oct. 2, 2020
The rematch between rivals Garden City and Dodge City boys soccer teams didn’t turn out the way new Buffalo head coach Jose Vital had envisioned following an earlier 2-0 loss to the Demons in Dodge City.
On Thursday night at Buffalo Stadium, the Buffs had battled the unbeaten Demons to a 0-0 standoff at halftime. That was the good news.
The second half, though, belonged to the visitors as they put together an offensive assault that the Buffs’ defenders couldn’t hold off, eventually falling 4-0. It was still a 2-0 match with 10 minutes remaining.
All-Stater and 2019 WAC Player of the Year Alan Lopez got the Demons on the board when he put in a brilliant header over Garden keeper Angel Guevara. That came in the 47th minute and just 2 minutes, 5 seconds later he added his second goal when he free-kicked the ball with a nifty curve into the far right side of the goal, that wen around the Buffs’ defenders in front of the net.
That 2-0 Dodge City lead was more than enough for the Demons as they limited the Buffs to just five shots in the match. The Demons would add an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Ernesto Monge scored and then capped it off with a goal in the 79th minute by Mike Sandoval.
Dodge City finished with 16 shots on goal to just the 5 for the Buffs. Guevara did have 7 saves for the Buffs. Garden City falls to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the WAC. Dodge City improves to 8-0 and 5-0.
